About us:

The Maryland SPCA (MD SPCA) is seeking an innovative and experienced marketing and communications professional to lead the organization in the areas of marketing, branding, communications and public relations as our next Marketing and Communications Director (MCD).

Founded in 1869, the MD SPCA is one of the nation’s oldest animal welfare organizations. We are an independent, 501 c 3 non-profit organization with no affiliation to the ASPCA. Our mission is to improve the lives of both pets and people in the greater Baltimore region and across the state of Maryland. We do this by delivering innovative programs and services in the areas of education, veterinary services, and humane care. Our team of over 90 staff is joined by a corps of nearly 1000 volunteers. Job Summary:

The Marketing and Communications Director (MCD) leads the marketing and communications strategy that brings our mission to life. The MCD is responsible for the planning, development and implementation of the Organization’s marketing, communications, and public relations strategies and activities, both external and internal. The MCD will lead the marketing of MD SPCA programs and services, including creating and implementing an annual marketing plan that achieves organizational goals and drives programmatic and revenue growth. The MCD will assume primary responsibility for ensuring the effective and timely delivery of all marketing and branding initiatives and processes.

This person directs the efforts of the marketing, communications staff (currently two) and coordinates at the strategic and tactical levels with the other functions of the Organization. The MCD keeps the big picture in focus and ties all marketing activity back to organizational goals, particularly driving program impact and revenue generation. Serves as the key point of contact for all major internal and external marketing and communications relationships (eyes, ears, and mouth of the marketing team as a whole). Oversees major marketing campaigns. Chief translator, navigator, and coach to the team. As a member of the executive management team, the MCD will be involved in organization-wide strategic and business planning, evaluation, and professional development initiatives. The position reports to the Executive Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead marketing and communications and strategy aligned with the MD SPCA mission, vision and strategic plan, including marketing, branding, public relations and advertising that engage diverse audiences and drive overall revenue and programmatic growth.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate an annual marketing and communications plan that encompasses social media, print and digital content, and email marketing.
  • Elevate the MD SPCA’s reputation and visibility in local, regional, and statewide communities
  • Oversee strategic management of our core communications platforms, including web properties, social, and newsletters
  • Ensures that the appropriate systems, staffing and procedures are in place to properly and reasonably support marketing and communications
  • Supervise the marketing and communications department, overseeing design, social marketing, public relations, and messaging/editorial functions, including the management of interns, volunteers, and external consultants as necessary.
  • Work closely with other directors and program staff to design and implement communications strategies and effective messaging to achieve departmental and program-specific goals.
  • Set creative direction and lead the development, design, distribution, and maintenance of high-quality print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to annual report, brochures, presentations, newsletters, and videos.
  • Lead the strategy and generation of engaging digital content for the MD SPCA website, social media and email channels that leads to measurable action in support of organizational goals.
  • Work with the Finance Director and the Development Director to develop annual budgets for marketing & communications in support of organizational financial goals, and monitor progress, assure adherence and evaluate performance.
  • Develop and manage partnerships that support organizational marketing and fundraising goals.
  • Ensure that brand identity, messaging and marketing and communications strategy are infused in all organizational efforts (programs, development, community relations).
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate marketing campaigns related to programs, special events, and donor cultivation.
  • Guide the strategy on press outreach, including messaging in press releases, creation of press kits and materials, interview preparation, and responses to media requests.
  • Identify trends, monitor current events and influencers to anticipate opportunities for MD SPCA to engage in and/or lead the conversation on animal welfare related topics.
  • Develop and maintain close partnerships with members of the media.
  • Serve as a primary spokesperson and represent the MD SPCA at public events.

Qualifications and Minimum Requirements:

  • BS/BA in marketing, communications, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in brand, marketing, communications, media relations for a non-profit organization (either agency and/or in-house experience)
  • Ability to excel at creating marketing strategy and vision and seeing it through to successful execution
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong working relationships across multiple departments and matrix manage
  • Ability to plan and manage at both strategic and operational levels
  • Extremely strong strategic planning and resource allocation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to drive revenue through highly effective digital marketing
  • Exceptional leadership skills and proven ability to attract, develop and coach key talent
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral, written, and presentation)
  • Creative thinker, a storyteller, who can develop compelling copy, and messaging in multiple forms that engages the audience
  • Demonstrated experience leading and working in a multidisciplinary team with different levels of experience, collaborating on copy and content for multiple aspects of the business
  • Combine creativity with strong analytical skills, measuring success and results driven
  • Have experience working with content experts to create and execute internal communications plans. This includes synthesizing technical language and complex information into clear, relevant messages with clarity of purpose, intent and broad perspective for a variety of audiences
  • Have excellent judgment and can act decisively in situations requiring quick but thorough analysis and decision-making
  • Are highly detail-oriented, have strong organizational and communication skills, and can prioritize and re-prioritize based on changing business needs
  • Have an entrepreneurial spirit and are excited by the challenges that come along with building a fresh, innovative, marketing and communications program

Working Conditions:

  • Work is usually performed in an office setting within an animal shelter
  • Noise levels are usually moderate
  • Occasional weekend and evening work required

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent sitting, use of computer keyboard and telephone up to 8 hours per day, with some standing, bending and walking
  • May occasionally handle kittens, puppies, cats and dogs
