Baltimore’s 46th Annual Advertising Awards Show Celebrates 100 Years of Wonder

Bully Entertainment Campaign for Deloitte Digital Wins Best in Show; 

idfive honored with Special Judges Award for Interactive Design & Art Direction

BALTIMORE — More than 300 of Baltimore’s advertisers, marketers and creatives gathered in wonder on Thursday, March 5 to celebrate the 46th Annual American Advertising Awards Show (the ADDYs), presented by the American Advertising Federation of Baltimore (AAFB). The event was held at Port Discovery Children’s Museum. 

The year’s preeminent advertising industry event, which was produced by Novak Birch with the theme “Wonderland,” serves as the kickoff of the AAFB’s 100th anniversary celebration. Eighteen gold ADDYs and 32 silver ADDYs were awarded to top agencies, production houses and in-house marketing teams in the Baltimore region. Two student ADDYs, a gold and a silver, were also awarded.

“Our industry is a wonderland of sorts and we are here to celebrate our creativity, curiosity and love of the unexpected. We’re a community that, as Lewis Carroll said, isn’t afraid to believe as many as six impossible things before breakfast,” said Jeremy Martin, the awards show chair and a creative director at Novak Birch, the marketing and events company that produced the show. 

“The event is also the perfect springboard for our 100th anniversary,” AAFB president Matt McDermott added. ”It invites us to reflect on how our industry has transformed over the last seven generations, bringing equal parts order and chaos to advertising.” 

In addition to awarding 52 ADDYs, “Wonderland” attendees were invited to tumble down the rabbit hole and experience Alice’s adventure with a four-story slide, flamingo croquet, tea party settings, “drink me” potions and “eat me” cakes for dessert. 

Top honors included:

  • Best in Show presented to Bully Entertainment for Deloitte Digital – Virtual Factory integrated campaign
  • Special Judges award for interactive design and art direction presented to idfive for the Smithsonian Institute 2019 Annual report

At the ceremony, the AAFB announced the recipients of its prestigious individual achievement awards:

  • Katherine Mahool Fowke Iconoclast Award presented to Kathy Harvey, founder and president of Harvey Agency
  • Lifetime Achievement Award presented to Roger Gray, chairman and CEO of GKV
  • Patricia Martin Crystal Prism Award presented to Jeremy Martin, creative director at Novak Birch
  • Silver Medal presented to Betsy Clark, vice president at Media Works

The American Advertising Awards competition is the industry’s largest and most representative competition — attracting more than 40,000 entries every year in local competitions. Gold winners at the local level move on to the regional competition, competing with agencies from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, Virginia and Washington, D.C. A win at the district level earns a spot in the National American Advertising Awards Competition. National winners will be announced at the AAF’s national conference, Admerica, taking place June 6-9, 2020 in Palm Springs.
