AAF of Baltimore Announces 2020 Individual Achievement Award Winners

New Katherine Mahool Fowke Iconoclast Award Announced in Honor of Club’s 100th Anniversary

February 27, 2020 — The American Advertising Federation of Baltimore (AAFB) announced today its 2020 Individual Achievement Awards, which will be presented at the 46th Annual American Advertising Awards Show (the ADDYs), Thursday, March 5, 2020 at Port Discovery Children’s Museum.

“The people we’re celebrating represent the best of Baltimore’s marketing and advertising community,” said Matt McDermott, president of the AAFB and associate VP, creative strategy at idfive. “We’re grateful for their contributions to promoting and supporting our thriving local industry.”

The AAFB is celebrating its 100th anniversary at this year’s American Advertising Awards with the addition of a new individual award — the Katherine Mahool Fowke Iconoclast Award. Named in honor of the first president of the organization that would eventually become the American Advertising Federation of Baltimore, the Iconoclast award celebrates women in advertising, marketing, business, and design who have redefined industries, defied stereotypes, and torn down barriers to success.

“We’re especially excited to announce the new Iconoclast Award,” said McDermott. “It honors the pioneering women who stood up for each other at a time when the industry — and our country — tried to silence them. My hope is this award will continue to recognize gutsy, creative women who are driving change and making an impact for generations to come.”

Katherine Mahool Iconoclast Award – Kathy Harvey, founder & president, Harvey Agency

From opening the doors to Harvey & Daughters in her twenties, through running Harvey Agency today, Harvey has been a force in Baltimore. Her shop’s award-winning work for brands like Tessamae’s, Flying Dog, McCormick, Covergirl, and more has continued to influence the creative landscape, while she herself has positively impacted the many professionals she has mentored, advocated for, and employed.

Lifetime Achievement Award – Roger Gray, chairman & CEO, GKV

As the founder and architect of GKV, Gray has served the Baltimore advertising community for more than 40 years. He has built GKV into one of the premier agencies in the Mid-Atlantic region, providing strategic direction on brands such as Choice Hotels, Independence Air, Lance Snack Foods, MJHS, Shentel Telecommunication and BGE Home. Gray also finds time to give back to the community through his generous service to Loyola University of Maryland, the Pride of Baltimore, the American Flag Foundation, the Mid-Atlantic Marketing Association, and more.

Silver Medal Award – Betsy Clark, vice president of Media Works

Clark is an industry veteran who has evolved her skills along with the shifting landscape of media, developing vast category experience across all media channels and research over the last 44 years. Having worked her way up from her first role as a receptionist at Richardson, Myers & Donofrio to the VP of Media Works, she continues to develop her digital strategy skillset, embrace new technology and build results-driven campaigns for her clients. Clark also has a passion for giving back to the community, especially in supporting her family’s involvement with the Special Olympics and John Hopkins Children’s Center.

Patricia Martin Crystal Prism Award – Jeremy Martin, creative director, Novak Birch

A conceptual and strategic leader with 20 years of experience in design, branding, and animation, Martin has made his mark in Baltimore advertising. He currently serves as creative director at Novak Birch, and previously worked at Mammoth Creative and TBC. On top of that, Martin has served on the Board of Directors of the American Advertising Federation of Baltimore since 2017, spearheading the annual American Advertising Awards for the past two years.
